In the spirit of the season, 49th Parallel is pleased to offer a Christmas treat to its readers - in advance of the forthcoming Winter Issue we are excited to present "A New Frontier - or just a 240,000 mile cul de sac?" by Mark Shanahan. The full issue will be published in the New Year.

November 2011

49th Parallel is issuing a Call For Papers and welcomes article submissions on any North American Studies related topic. Please see our CFP and submission guidelines for full details of how to submit.

We would also like to encourage you to join the 49th Parallel community on Facebook and Twitter where we have regular updates and are introducing a weekly article "From the Archive" giving readers a chance to explore the journal's back catalogue.

We are pleased to present out latest issue and would like to thank all those who have contributed to it.

This is also a month of change at 49th Parallel. Hannah Durkin, John Horne and Ceren Serenzger are leaving the journal for pastures new, however the editorial team will be more than replenished as we welcome Katie Barnett, Rebecca Isaacs, Daniel King, Mǎdǎlina Stǎlniceanu and Bart Verhoeven onboard.

We would like to belatedly thank Fio Dossetto and Daniel King, the organisers of Twenty-first Century American and Canadian Voices, for putting together such a fantastic conference. We look forward to publishing a special issue of conference papers in the coming months.

We are delighted to present our latest issue, offering a selection of articles, reviews and video.

We are also excited to announce our new link with EA Worldview, a cutting-edge news site offering daily updates on America and the world.

Finally, we would like to encourage our readers to contribute to the 'American Studies in the UK, 2000-2010' research project. Details can be found at the BAAS website.

March 2011

49th Parallel are delighted to be supporting Twenty-first Century American and Canadian Voices. This is a one-day symposium on the state of American and Canadian literary, dramatic, film and television productions since the turn of the millennium. It is being held at the University of Nottingham on June 16th 2011. The call for papers is open until April 10th and can be seen here.

We have also organised a panel for the British Association of Canadian Studies 36th Annual Conference. It is being held at the University of Birmingham on 4th-6th April, 2011.

Our panel, State of (In)Security: Constructing and contesting Canadian national identity, features papers by Zalfa Feghali (University of Nottingham), Maureen Kincaid Speller (University of Kent) and Yun-hua Chen (University of St Andrews). It will be chaired by Gillian Roberts (University of Nottingham). For more information about the conference, please see the website.
